Hi Derek. I suspect you're from the US (references to overweight Americans and gym class - we just call it PE - suggest as much). I can't really comment on how things work in US schools, but it seems that most of what you say applies in South Australia as well (PE is mostly physical activity, high rates of obesity, etc).

But you're wrong when you say that PE isn't stressful. Perhaps it wasn't for you, perhaps you like excercising and playing team sports, but not everyone does. Personally, I hated PE. Of course, just because something is stressful doesn't mean we should go without it. After all, some people find maths and English stressful too and these subjects are compulsory, at least up to year 11.

The difference is that a good education requires literacy and numeracy but not physical fitness (an unfit man might be educated but an illeterate one surely isn't). Since our high school certificate is called the 'South Australian Certificate of <i>Education</i>' it really should focus on education rather than fitness. I don't have a problem with schools having compulsory PE classes (at least not in primary school) but to make it a requirement of the SACE seems silly.

Physical education wont make a student have more stress in the classes that are important. At my school people love gym and dont think of it as being a stress. I see no reason how P.E. can cause stress. All you do is play some sports or do a little work out, its not like they give you homework. Anyways I think P.E. helps encourage students to work out since over 50% percent of Americans are overweight and kids would still bring junk food to school even if it was banned. Or just back fire and kids would eat more junk at home.

Actually, that's what happened in the State senate a few years back. Trouble was Anne Bressington's views were quite different from Nick Xenophon's - perhaps more to your tastes, but definitely not to mine. I voted for Bressington ahead of the Greens back then and I was pretty disappointed with the outcome.
A better (but less realistic) outcome in the federal senate would have been more Greens and Democrats, at least one rep from one of the better minor parties (I'm thinking Senator On-Line, CCC or Secular Party), and no Family First reps.

The only better outcome would've been Nick getting two seats.
